Ms. Zohra Banu Become Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Her achievement of securing an All-India UPSC Rank of 469 has captivated the public and inspired many.
Zohra’s remarkable journey from the remote Andaman and Nicobar Islands to the esteemed Indian Foreign Service is a testament to her exceptional determination and resilience. Raised in a modest home by her father, Mohammed Hanifa, a retired driver from the Department of Information and Publicity, and her mother, Fatima Bibi, Zohra’s story highlights the powerful role of family support in overcoming challenges.
Her academic journey began at Ummat Public School, where she laid a strong foundation for her future. Despite the challenges of living in a remote area, Zohra excelled in her studies. Her academic curiosity led her to pursue undergraduate studies at Andhra Engineering College, where she demonstrated a keen interest in innovation and learning.
Zohra’s ambitions extended beyond engineering. Fueled by a passion for knowledge, she ventured into data science, taking courses at IIT Madras. Her professional experience as a corporate senior associate at Zenpact further showcased her dedication and adaptability.
The support of her family has been crucial to her success. Her mother, Fatima Bibi, made history as the first woman from their village to complete senior secondary education, setting an inspiring example for future generations. Additionally, Zohra’s elder sister, Mrs. Hazra, who pursued higher education abroad, has been a source of inspiration, encouraging Zohra to aim high.
During her UPSC interview, Zohra’s unique background as a candidate from the Andaman and Nicobar Islands captured the attention of the chairman, highlighting her extraordinary achievement. Her success is a beacon of hope for the youth of the islands, proving that with determination and hard work, geographical barriers can be overcome.
