In a significant move to combat drug abuse, the Andaman and Nicobar (A&N) Police have destroyed a substantial quantity of seized drugs valued at approximately Rs. 475 crores. The event, organized to mark the “International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking,” followed directives from the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India in Mohanlal vs. Union of India and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Rules (Seizure, Storage, Sampling, and Disposal), 2022.
The mass drug disposal event began at 11:30 AM under the supervision of the Drug Disposal Committee, chaired by Ms. Varsha Sharma, IPS, DIGP (L&O). The committee also included prominent members such as Mr. Rajeev Ranjan, IPS, SP (CID), Mr. Mohd. Irshad Haider, IPS, SP (HQ), and Mr. Kumar Abhishek, DANIPS, Dy.SP (CID). Representatives from the A&N Pollution Control Board, Enviro Check (for measuring emitted pollutants), and GB Pant Hospital also participated in the supervision.
The drugs are being incinerated over a two-day period at the incinerator located in GB Pant Hospital. The entire destruction process was recorded on video and adhered to all legal procedures.
This rigorous effort by the Andaman and Nicobar Police highlights their commitment to creating a drug-free community and realizing the vision of a “Nasha Mukt Bharat.” The destruction of these drugs underscores the A&N Police’s dedication to enforcing laws and safeguarding the health and well-being of the community.
During the event, police officials interacted with the media. Mr. Rajeev Ranjan, IPS, SP (CID), stated, “On International Drug Abuse Day, the Andaman and Nicobar Police organized a massive drug disposal day, following a similar effort three months ago. Today, we have destroyed a total of 61 case properties, including:
– 238.416 kg of Methamphetamine
– 67.636 kg of Ganja
– 1.060 kg of Cocaine
– 21 Cannabis Plants
– 76 grams of Charas
– 546 bottles of Codeine-based syrup
– 553 tablets of Alprazolam
With proper procedures, we are destroying these drugs at the GB Pant Hospital incinerator. We thank the Honorable Court for granting permission and the hospital authorities for their support. The police department is stringent against drug trafficking, and we urge the public to support our efforts throughout the year.”
