Andaman Nicobar : Haddo Vegetable Market Poses Serious Threat to Commuters and Pedestrians

Reporte – JOHN WILBERT , Port Blair, Andaman Nicobar , 30 May 2024:

Andaman Nicobar : The Haddo Vegetable Market, situated near the Hanuman Mandir and Chatham Station Police, has increasingly become a safety hazard for both commuters and pedestrians. The market, known for its ease of access, has seen an uncontrolled expansion with stray vendors occupying pedestrian walkways, forcing customers to stand on the road to purchase vegetables. This situation has exacerbated traffic congestion and created a perilous environment, particularly on the main road used by heavy vehicles transporting cargo from the Haddo Wharf.

The road near the market is a critical artery, connecting to Chatham Jetty and used by numerous buses and passenger vehicles daily. The encroachment of vendors onto the footpath has led to customers parking their vehicles on the road, further worsening the traffic chaos. This has become particularly dangerous given the area’s steep slopes and hilly terrain.

A cargo driver, expressing concerns about the worsening conditions, stated, “The road is extremely dangerous nowadays because many people stand on the road to buy vegetables. With the road already being a steep slope in a hilly area, carrying heavy cargo material demands maintaining speed. If someone suddenly comes in front of the truck, it becomes very difficult to handle the situation.”

Residents from the Bambooflat area, who rely on this route to catch vehicle ferries or passenger ferries, frequently experience long traffic jams, leading to delays and frustration.

The increasing congestion and hazardous conditions have prompted calls for immediate action to restore safety and order in the area. Measures such as designating specific vending zones away from pedestrian pathways, enhancing traffic management, and ensuring stricter enforcement of parking regulations could alleviate the current issues. The involvement of local authorities to address and regulate the market’s expansion is crucial to safeguard the well-being of both commuters and consumers.

The Haddo Vegetable Market’s impact on traffic and pedestrian safety underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive solution to manage the area’s growing commercial activities while ensuring the safety and convenience of all road users.
