In a landmark event, the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, Shri Keshav Chandra, IAS, virtually launched the ‘Kuposhan Mukt District Abhiyan’ in Nicobar today, marking a significant step towards eradicating malnutrition in the region. This ambitious program aims to achieve zero cases of acute malnutrition within the next three months, showcasing a unified effort to combat child undernutrition.
The Chief Secretary highlighted the collaborative nature of the Kuposhan Mukt Nicobar initiative as a model for other regions to emulate. “This program represents a collective commitment to our children’s future,” said the Chief Secretary during the launch event. “By working together, leveraging community resources, and focusing on coordinated health and nutrition strategies, we can make a tangible difference in eradicating malnutrition”, he remarked.
The Deputy Commissioner, Nicobar District, Ms. Jyoti Kumari, IAS highlighted the significance of providing immediate nutritional support to malnourished children as a crucial step towards eradicating malnutrition in Nicobar District.
The launching ceremony was attended by the Tribal Council, local officials, community leaders, PRI’s and representatives from various sectors who gathered to witness the launch of this vital program. The Chief Secretary’s presence underscored the Government’s commitment to improving nutritional outcomes and health standards for children in Nicobar District.
Key Highlights of the Kuposhan Mukt Nicobar Initiative:
- Zero Cases Target: The primary objective of the Kuposhan Mukt Nicobar District initiative is to eliminate cases of acute malnutrition among children in the region within the next three months. This ambitious goal reflects a robust strategy and unwavering dedication to improving child health.
- Synergy between Anganwadis and Health Centres: The initiative emphasizes the importance of collaboration between Anganwadi Centres and local Health Centres. By integrating resources and efforts, these entities will work together to provide comprehensive nutritional support and health services. This synergy is expected to enhance the efficiency and reach of the program, ensuring that no child is left behind.
- Voluntary Contribution of Poshan Kits: In a remarkable display of community spirit, the local Market Associations have come forward as Poshan Mitra with significant contributions of Poshan Kits. These kits, specially designed to meet the nutritional needs of children were distributed during the events to malnourished children. The collective effort of the community plays a crucial role in achieving the initiative’s target and improving the overall health of the region’s children.
Besides the launching programme, a medical screening camp was organized alongwith distribution of Poshan kits, fruits and vegetable bearing plants to malnutrition children. Poshan Mitras were felicitated with Appreciation Certificate and video highlighting Kuposhan symptoms and its remedial measures was screened during the event.
The launch of Kuposhan Mukt Nicobar District sets a new benchmark for addressing child nutrition and health challenges. It exemplifies a concerted effort between Government agencies, health professionals and the community to create a healthier and more nourished future for Nicobar District children. Similar programmes were organized at Kamorta and Campbell Bay.
