Department of Animal Husbandry Promotes Pig Rearing in North and Middle Andaman with Distribution of Piglets and Training

Port Blair, 20 August 2024:

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services is taking efforts to popularize rearing of pigs in North and Middle Andaman. The Department is maintaining a Govt. Piggery Farm at Webi, Mayabunder to cater to the needs of livestock farmers of North and Middle Andaman in which, large white yorkshire and ghungroo pigs are reared. The large white yorkshire is known for its large litter size and for low fat content meat production. The body of large white yorkshire is white and has longer legs, erect ears and slightly dished face. Ghungroo is indigenous pig and well known for its high prolificacy and adaptability to low input systems. It is black in colour and is suitable for any climate. During the last financial year 2023-24, 165 piglets were distributed to 106 farmers in North and Middle Andaman on a cost basis. During the current financial year 2024-25, till date, 51 numbers of piglets have been distributed to 29 beneficiaries.

Additionally, short-term scientific training on feed management has been regularly provided to beneficiaries and farmers. Interested individuals have been requested to contact their nearest Veterinary Hospital for both short-term training and piglet requirement, with availability on a first-come, first-served basis.
