IMD Celebrates 150th Foundation Day with Nationwide Events and Community Activities

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) celebrated its 150th Foundation Day with grand events held at its Headquarters and Regional Centres across the country. The inaugural ceremony at the Headquarters in New Delhi, held on 14th January, 2025, marked a significant milestone in the journey of IMD. The event was graced by the presence of the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi, as the chief guest, along with other distinguished dignitaries, including Dr. Jitendra Singh, Minister of Earth Sciences, and Prof. Celeste Saulo, Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organization. This momentous occasion reflected the IMD’s long-standing commitment to advancing meteorological science and serving the nation.

 

At the Meteorological Centre, Sri Vijaya Puram, under the leadership of its Head, Shri Surendra Pratap Singh, the celebration of this historic event extended to a series of community-centric activities. The staff at Meteorological Centre Sri Vijaya Puram organized a range of events aimed at engaging the public and raising awareness about meteorological science and environmental conservation.

The activities included Beach Cleaning Drive at Wandoor, Yoga Session, Plantation Drive, Blood Donation Camp and Painting Competition.

On 14th January, 2025, the staff of Meteorological Centre Sri Vijaya Puram organized an event where they live telecasted the Headquarters event featuring the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. The event at Meteorological Centre Sri Vijaya Puram was graced by the presence of Smt. Mangayakarasi, the Ward Councillor. She distributed certificates among the children and staff, recognizing their participation and contributions to the events. Retired staff were also felicitated during this event, acknowledging their years of dedicated service to the organization.

Additionally, there was a technical session with Associate Professor & Head, Dr. K.Sonamuthu from the Physics Department of JNRM, who discussed advancements in the field of Science, highlighting the latest developments in meteorological research and technology.

Similarly, on 15th January, 2025, the Office organized an open house for the public to visit the observatory. A large number of students from different schools participated in this open house, providing them with a unique opportunity to learn about meteorological instruments and the importance of weather forecasting in daily life.

These events reflected the IMD’s dedication not only to its scientific mission but also to its role as a socially responsible organization. The celebration at Meteorological Centre Sri Vijaya Puram underscored the commitment of the Centre to foster community engagement and environmental stewardship. As the IMD stepped into its 150th year, these events at the Headquarters and Regional Centres symbolized a tribute to its rich legacy and a renewed pledge to continue serving the nation with excellence in meteorological services.
